Very proud of my dear Atis for once again being chosen as one of the artists for Pacific New Media's Contemporary Photography in Hawaii Exhibition. Always so impressive!

Artist Statement

Earth at 970 MPH
This series of photographs started from the idea of my project Ancient Light.  This project is an investigation between the age of the present sunlight's age with the history of humanity.  NASA calculates the sunlight reaching us during the present was conceived in the sun's core 17,000 to 100,000 years ago.  With the age of the sunlight reaching us now older than human history, I am interested in conveying the Absurd -the more humanity gains knowledge about our universe, the more we realize our insignificance.
Earth at 970 MPH is an ongoing series of photographs of the sun and the landscape of Earth.  My imaging process is tracking the sun's movement in the sky, accurately aiming my camera directly at the sun in long exposures.  The result is a photograph of the sun motionless, with Earth's landscape rendered as a blurred motion.  This motion blur is the result of the Earth's rotation, spinning at 970 MPH in my current location of Oahu.
